And so it was that I found myself in the deep backcountry of Alaska, miles from the nearest civilised hotel and by all accounts miles from the nearest friendly search and rescue guy."

"Jungles of grass and flowers whip our arms as we race along on our mountain bikes. The vegetation obscures rocks, approaching curves, and grizzly bears that could be lurking around each bend.

But we whoop and holler every few seconds, “Heh, bear! Coming through!” to announce our presence. We stay about 10 yards behind the mountain biker in front, so we won’t crash if they stop abruptly and, to keep it tight enough to prevent a startled grizzly from darting in between.

It is both exhilarating and terrifying..."

"Two weeks later, we returned to Anchorage to meet Mike and Tammy Brislin, Janet Saxon, Laura Smith, MaryJean Noland, Steve Kirschbaum, and Paul Delia.

On Monday (8/25), Tony Berberich, the owner of Alaska Backcountry Bike Tours,
and his able guides, Jen (a champion extreme/MTB rider/racer) and Eddie, picked us all up in Anchorage to take us on our five-day tour of great riding, camaraderie, a fjord/glacier cruise and of course, the good times that our MTB group always has when we spend time together. En route to the Kenai Peninsula, we all knew that this was going to be a truly great trip when we stopped on Turnagain Arm to observe diving Beluga whales. Later that day..."
